Melanie turned at the sound of the door opening, and our eyes locked. Heat and awareness flared between us, and it was as if an invisible cord stretched out over the distance, pulling me toward her.

I was barely aware of the others as they stood and said their goodbyes, but I did notice Tevin grinning widely as he wrapped his arm around his mate and led her toward the door.

I stepped aside as they left, but I couldn’t take my eyes off Mel. I hardly noticed the knowing looks Morgan and Serene gave me, all of my attention on my mate, the memory of our kiss burned into my mind.

Once the others were gone, I shut the door behind them but still kept my distance, as hard as it was. If I wasn’t careful, my desire might make me lose control.

Melanie’s tongue darted out to nervously lick her lips, and I tracked the movement like a predator, anticipation and need flaring within me. Yeah, she wanted me as much as I wanted her. I’d been kidding myself this entire time that I could just ignore it and hope it went away.

“We need to talk.”

Her eyes widened and she nodded, but she still didn’t say anything or make a move to close the distance between us. So maybe she was just as thrown off by our kiss as I was.

Mel glanced at the clock. It was nearly eleven. “As long as my trainer doesn’t give me hell if I’m tired tomorrow.” A teasing grin pulled at her lips.

“Just let me know if he’s being an ass. I'll take care of him.”

Melanie laughed, and I was at once at ease and on edge. Despite how much I wanted her, how uncontrollable my desire felt, we always managed to find our balance. She did settle me, just like Tevin had mentioned, even while she riled me up. It was just as much of a contradiction as her own personality that had intrigued me from the start.

“Let me just grab a coat.” Melanie grabbed her warm puffer jacket that Serene had given her since the temperature had been dropping, then shoved her feet into her boots and smiled at me. “Okay, all ready.”

Her smile warmed my body, and I impulsively reached my hand out toward her. She glanced down, then back up at me, her brow furrowed, but then she tentatively slipped her hand in mine. Even such a small gesture caused my heart to leap with hope. She trusted me. I’d do everything I could to keep my wolf in check and make sure that trust remained intact.

Threading my fingers through hers,
